On the internet as in real estate, an unused property can be rented while not in use. Some companies will gladly provide you with a generic site, tuned to your keywords and filled with advertising. Big names are sedo, godaddy.com, and for major accounts google also has a proposal.
Some sites get differently customized, though result always is a very "standardized" website at best, default often being hard-to-look-at. For instance with sedo some variations are recommanded, as the lite template is plain ugly, classic is bland. Few templates as happy phenix or retro style are more or less at par with decency.
