Linux comes in a whole variety of flavors. When time to choose, better choose wisely :).
To try out the interface, you can run knoppix livecd or unbuntu livecd.
For a definitive install, I would rate the ubuntu distribution above the others, based on the fact it is debian-based. Fedora core may come to mind, but alot more hassle. Debian is not as up-to-date and hardware-detection performant even if it still rocks ;)
